The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is one of America’s largest animal rights organizations. In 2023, the group had a total budget of $178 million, raised on the back of universal name recognition and advertisements featuring homeless pets in need of urgent support.
But how much of that budget actually made it to pet shelters in need via financial grants? We examined the Humane Society’s 2023 tax returns and found that a miniscule percentage of the organization’s budget was actually granted to pet shelters in 2023.
- The Humane Society of the United States raised $175 million and spent $178 million in 2023. Less than one percent of that budget made it to local pet shelters via financial grants.
- The Humane Society of the United States did not report a single financial grant to pet shelters in 29 states.
- The total amount of money granted to local pet shelters by the Humane Society of the United States declined by 53 percent since 2021, despite the organization growing its budget by around $40 million in the same time period.
