October 2025
In 2024, more than 600,000 cats and dogs were euthanized at pet shelters in the United States.
Shelter euthanasia totals have been climbing since 2020, increasing by 43 percent since that year, despite America’s leading animal nonprofits raising an ever increasing amount of money.
The ASPCA, Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States), and PETA raised enough money to save every single cat and dog euthanized last year. But, unfortunately, their priorities are elsewhere. These organizations do little to shelter at-risk cats and dogs, instead spending a great deal of money on executive compensation and investment portfolios.
The euthanasia crisis is real, and America’s leading animal charities can not be relied on to fix it.
